Featured Momma-Allison

I am so happy to feature my friend and former co-worker, Allison! She is one of the most dedicated, hardworking, and knowledgeable professionals I've ever had the pleasure of working alongside of, and just a truly wonderful person to be around. Allison's friendship has meant so much to me over the past several years-both professionally and personally. I respect her immensely and am so glad she could share her insights into motherhood and unique perspective as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Please enjoy her feature, and thank you again, Allison.

Name: Allison

Age: 30

Children: Girl-10 months old

Occupation: Speech-Language Pathologist

As a Speech Language Pathologist, what advice would you give to other mommas as it relates to your career?

The best advice I could give to other mommas as it relates to speech/language is a pretty simple task to complete… T A L K! Talk as often as possible to your child! It doesn’t matter what you’re talking about. They will learn vocabulary, articulation, syntax skills etc. just from hearing you speak correctly. You may feel silly washing dishes and saying “I turn the handle and water comes out!” but it is beneficial for your child. Children learn language from hearing language in real life situations.

What has surprised you the most about motherhood?

No one can truly prepare you for the overwhelming emotion that comes with being a mother. You always hear that but I never really understood until I became a mother. It is all encompassing. You’re constantly questioning yourself however, in the back of your mind, know that you’re making the best decision for your child. It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done to date though the absolute best.

How do you practice self-care as a mom?

I try and get my nails done about once a month. I enjoy the actual process of getting them done and like looking at them for a couple weeks afterwards. :)

Best advice about motherhood you’ve received?

Go with your gut! Your maternal instinct kicks in and you need to follow it. My gut feeling has been spot on thus far.

Must-have baby registry product?

The Nose Frida! Before I became a mom this product really grossed me out but after you become a mom you will do anything to help your child feel better and this works wonders!!
